Colourful Tulip Festival – Wellington Botanical Garden

07.07.2011 · Posted in NZ

Sometimes on a cold, wet and windy winter’s day it is good to be reminded of summer’s warmth and colour. Every spring, to celebrate the warming weather, the Wellington Botanical garden plants tulips of every shape, size and colour. The garden’s beauty causes the rushed to slow down, the stressed to take a deep breath and those feeling low to have their spirits lifted. The aroma and colours flood the senses, requiring the spectator to yield to its charm.

For some reason the blooming tulips bring out a playful side to people. While I was there I watched adults and children alike, lying on the ground next to the tulips, sitting in the middle of flower beds, twirl around and skip. There was one couple (in their late 50′s)  that “oo’ed and ah’ed ” and then fell on the grass laughing. Those of us watching their pure delight couldn’t stop the belly laughter from rumbling out of us. It is in moments like those where there is total abandonment and pure enjoyment that healing, freshness and energy fills the body. It makes life seem special, exciting and an adventure worth having.

  1. Just what I need now on this cold and windy winter days in Sydney. I smell summer :)

  2. Are they in bloom right now Kerry-Anne?

  3. Flowers are always fascinating. They also bring out my inner child. “Healing, freshness, and energy” – spot on, Kerry-Anne. That’s exactly what I think flowers give.

    • Glad someone agrees with me. I love flowers and love the colours. I still find myself stopping and examing all sorts of flowers when I go walking. Sometimes I get so engrossed in looking at them that I forget what I was supposed to be doing!

  4. I also love photographing flowers. I really like the first two images. If you do not already you might want to get Lightroom from Adobe. A great way to organize images in categories and do some post production

    • Thanks Jim for your comments – appreciated especially coming from someone like you! I will have a look at Lightroom – generally don’t do post production on images that I put up on my blog, but will definitely be a useful tool for my other works!

  5. Lovely! It did brighten up my day! My mother in law grows Tulips in Russia for a living. I love these flowers and they are really beautiful. My favourite flower is the carnation :)

    • What a job – growing tulips! Though I would guess it could be quite tough. My favourite tulip colour is the purple – called ‘Black diamond’. I always head straight for those take a million photographs (of which none capture the essence of the flowers) and then drink in the colours of the others. Carnations – delicate, beautiful and romantic!

  6. Wow- those orange tulips are the most vibrant and beautiful flowers I think I’ve ever seen. That rain must be made of out magic water!
